Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882, born in Boston) was an American essayist, philosopher, poet and lecturer. He was the main representative of the transcendentalist movement.
Emerson graduated from Harvard University in 1821, after graduating he preached in the Unitarian community until 1832. The loss of his wife, combined with the crisis in the Christian faith, were the main reasons behind Emerson resignation from the clergy.
The main representatives of this movement believed that man can “transcend” or go beyond the physical, material boundaries of this world through intuition and free will, in order to get closer to the Divinity.
In this school of thought, God was not mysterious and distant, the believers considered that they could understand the Divinity by analyzing their own spirit and establishing a connection with nature.
